  • Description

With the kind of jubilation it reserves for its special heroes, New York went pleasantly wild over the Mets World Series triumph on Thursday (16 October).

From the sleek skyscrapers of Wall Street, where a spontaneous tickertape blizzard greeted the World Series Victory, to the bars in a hundred neighbourhoods, where the toasts were all for the Mets, the shouted cry was; "We're Number One!"
Teachers suspended classes, because their students were listening to the game on the radio and could not concentrate on their studies. Bosses closed officers early for the same reason. And even policeman shrugged happily as they despaired of keeping order in the streets.

Celebrators, wading through paper that was ankle-deep in Wall Street and Midtown Manhattan, hopelessly clogged traffic during the evening rush, an hour after the game ended. But the mood was happy, and even stalled motorists seemed not to mind.
