INTRODUCTION: The once outlawed Workers Commissions of Spain have been making a comeback in the past few days. On Friday they held a mass meeting at the bullring in Madrid, and on Sunday (25 September) they took a train through part of Spain to rally support. The Commissions, which represent left-wing trade union and workers' interests, have only recently been legalised under the new Spanish Government's programme of "democratisation", and they've organised these recent activities with a view to the country's forthcoming municipal elections.

SYNOPSIS: The trip began at Zaragoza where Workers Commissions members and supporters decked out the tented state train with their red flags and banners. More than a thousand people made the trip, and among them was the well-known Communist Labour leader, Mr.Marcelino Camacho, who has returned to the forefront of the Workers Commissions after spending several long terms in prison during the Franco regime.

The train also sported the red and yellow striped flag of the former Kingdom of Aragon. The people of the Aragon region, like those of several other Spanish regions, are campaigning for the return of autonomous rule which they held before General Franco came to power. The Workers Commissions have taken up this cause, and promoted it on their outing.

The 200-mile journey from Zaragoza north to the French border took them along tracks which were once connected to the French railways...a connection which the people there went to re-establish.

En route the train stopped at Huesca where a large crowd heard an address by camacho. In his recent speeches the Workers Commissions leader has been talking about Government policy as it affects the trade unions and workers generally-with unemployment, a major problem in Spain. Mr. Camacho has been putting forward the Commissions' views on these issues in relation to Spain's forthcoming municipal elections.
