  • Description

Sgt. Quan of the South Vietnamese army stationed in Kien Binh is an efficient soldier.

He has killed many Viet Cong in the area, collects local taxes, and in general is so appreciated by his superiors that they give him officer privileges.

He has however one big problem. He wants to be an officer, but is not admitted because he has had no education.

Quan's superiors say he is crude. They say his only solution to problems is to kill. By his own account he has shot, stabbed, choked, drowned or beaten to death 87 people. And his superiors are not sure that they were all Viet Cong.

When walking around Kien Binh, Sgt. Quan looks relaxed, but in fact he is not. He knows the Viet Cong have a price on his head, and have said they would gladly sacrifice and entire company to be rid of him. They have tried four times, but each time Quan has tracked the would-be assassins down and shot them.

Quan's consolation is that the Kien Binh District Chief Major Hoi treats him like a brother, that he owns the only car in the district, and that he lives in one of the best homes with his mother, wife, and six children.

But the bullet holes and damage in his home are evidence of the most recent attempt by the Viet Cong to kill him. He is aware that his time may be running out, but in his situation, with a family to support, any move has to be carefully considered. He cannot become an officer, so he must go on as he is.

When asked what he would do about the young Viet Cong recruits suspected of making the latest attempt on his life, his answer was simple. He would go after them, find them, and when he did, kill them.
