  • Description

Israeli Army Chief of Staff, General Bar Lev warned the United Arab Republic yesterday (Wednesday October 28), that if the war resumes after the expiration on November 5, of the cease-fire, Israeli tanks will take the war over into Egyptian territory. The General was addressing a graduation ceremony for new tank commanders in Tel Aviv.

The graduation ceremony was part of the commemorations on Armoured Corps Day marking the 13th anniversary of "Operation Kadesh" (the 1956 Sinai Campaign). Throughout Israel armoured units observed the day wherever they were stationed.

Addressing the tank commander gradates, General Bar Lev said that the Israeli Army would prove to the Egyptian again that the use of force will not pay and that it is the UAR's interest to observe the cease-fire. The Armoured Corps Commanding Officer General Aluf the Avraham Adan also attended the parade and issued a special order of the day.

The tanks used by the Armoured Corps are M-47 and M-48 "Pattons" installed with special 105 mm guns and diesel engines. This gives them an identical speed and battle endurance as the later model Patton said to be supplied to Israel very recently. Advantages the "super-Patton" will have over these tanks already in service are laser range-finders, a sophisticated fire control system and a more streamlined turret to give better deflection protection.

Israel spends nearly four million dollars (about 1,600,000 sterling) a day on defence and is expected to spend at least 1,400 million dollars (600 million sterling) on defence next year even if the cease-fire continues. The figures were released on Tuesday (October 27) by the Minister of Finance, Trade and Industry, Mr. Pinhas Sapir.
