The first South Africa versus New Zealand Rugby union Test - at Ellis Park Ground, Johannesburg, June 25, - resulted in an afternoon of exciting play, with plenty of thrills for the 75,000 crowd, and a 13-nil victory for the hosts. The scoring was 2 goals and one penalty goal.

Highlights were the 2 tries, both brilliant achievements by the new Springbok left wing three-quarter, Hennie van Zyl.

30-year-old Captain and full back R. Dryburgh converted Try No. 1; scrum half R. Lockyer, making his international debut, the second. Lockyer also kicked the difficult penalty shot.

It was largely a forwards' game, and the Springboks dominated, both in the forward and back play, their All Black opponents.

Both tries came from similar movements - winger M. Antelme coming into the line alongside fly half K. Oxlee, and enabling Van Zyl to benefit from the overlap. After the game, delighted crowds chaired Van Zyl from the field.
