  • Description

The Inter-Parliamentary Union opened a six-day conference in Sri lanka's capital, Colombo, on Monday (31 March).

Some 400 delegates from 64 countries are attending, and they listened to the opening address given by Sri Lankan President William Gopallawa.

The conference will discuss matters such as the role of parliament in defending the rights of women and the non-proliferation of nuclear arms.

It is also expected that Greece and Haiti will be admitted to the 74-nation Union, which includes some Arab countries and Israel.

The conference is to prepare for a plenary session to be held in London later this year.

Sri Lanka's Prime Minister, Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, also spoke at the conference, which is being held in the 1,500-seat marble-and-glass conference hall built by China in memory of her husband -- Prime Minister Solomon Bandaranaike -- who was assassinated in September 1959.
