  • Description

THE TRADITIONAL BAMBOO BEATING FESTIVAL TOOK PLACE AT ROKUGO, NORTH-WEST JAPAN, RECENTLY IN A HEAVY SNOWSTORM. THIS UNUSUAL CEREMONY, WHICH DATES BACK SOME 450 YEARS, TAKES PLACE EVERY FEBRUARY. HUNDREDS OF YOUNG MEN TAKE PART IN THE CONTEST, WHICH TAKES THE FORM OF TWO GROUPS BEATING ONE ANOTHER WITH 15 FOOT (4.6 METRE) BAMBOO STICKS.

THE DECISION AS TO WHICH OF THE OPPOSING GROUPS OF BAMBOO BEATERS HAS WON THE CONTEST IS LEFT TO A SHINTO PRIEST TO ADJUDICATE. THIS YEAR, THE GROUP FROM THE NORTH WON. AFTER THE CONTEST, THE PRIEST PREDICTED THAT THE AKITA AREA - ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S MAIN SOURCES OF RICE - WOULD HAVE GOOD SPRING AND AUTUMN CROPS.
