    VISITING THE U.S. ATLANTIC FLEET, PRESIDENT KENNEDY WAS FLOWN BY HELICOPTER TO THE "ENTERPRISE", AMERICA'S NUCLEAR CARRIER, APRIL 14, TO WATCH A SIMULATED SUBMARINE HUNT IN A DEMONSTRATION OF NAVY FIRE POWER, OFF THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST.

    DURING HIS TWO-DAY REVIEW OF AMERICA'S NAVAL MIGHT, WHICH INCLUDED A LANDING EXERCISE BY MARINES, TANKS AND ARTILLERY WITH AIR SUPPORT, THE PRESIDENT ALSO INSPECTED THE NUCLEAR SUBMARINE "THOMAS A. EDISON" AT NORFOLK NAVAL BASE, VIRGINIA.

    USING THE SUBMARINE'S ONE-MAN LIFT, A CYLINDRICAL STEEL CAGE ATTACHED TO A HOIST ON DECK, MR. KENNEDY WENT BELOW TO WATCH EXERCISES THROUGH THE VESSEL'S PERISCOPE. WITH HIM WAS HIS NAVAL AIDE, CAPTAIN TAZEWELL SHEPARD. THE SUBMARINE DID NOT SUBMERGE DURING THE INSPECTION.
