TORRENTIAL RAIN IN PARTS OF ITALY ON MONDAY BROUGHT FLOODS TO WIDE AREAS. THE STORMS?

  • Description

TORRENTIAL RAIN IN PARTS OF ITALY ON MONDAY BROUGHT FLOODS TO WIDE AREAS. THE STORMS SWEPT ACROSS ITALY FROM THE TYRRHENIAN SEA, BRINGING WINDS OF UP TO NINETY MILES AN HOUR TO SOME REGIONS, DEEP SNOW TO OTHERS - AND IN DISTRICTS CLOSE TO ROME - SERIOUS FLOODING.

DURING THE TWENTY-FOUR HOURS DOWNPOUR WHICH SATURATED THE COUNTRYSIDE, FIREMEN ANSWERED HUNDREDS OF CALLS FOR HELP FROM HOMES, AS THE WATERS ROSE STEADILY. CARS WERE BROUGHT TO A HALT BY RAGING FLOODWATERS AND MANY WERE ABANDONED BY THEIR DRIVERS.

FARMS WERE BADLY HIT. MANY FIELDS WERE COMPLETELY INUNDATED IN LOW-LYING AREAS. MINOR LANDSLIDES STRIPPED SOME SLOPES OF THEIR GRASS COVER, WHILE DEPOSITING LAYERS OF MUD ON LOW-LYING LAND.

THE DISRUPTION TO ROAD TRAFFIC COINCIDED WITH A STRIKE OF ITALY'S RAILWAYMEN - AND TRANSPORT IN MAY PLACES WAS IN A STATE OF CHAOS.

THE FLOOD HAS RECEDED TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
