SYNOPSIS: A large crowd gathered at the Memorial for the Victims of Stalinism in West Berlin on Friday for a wreath-laying ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall. West Berlin's Governing-Mayor Klaus Schuetz was among those who placed a wreath at the memorial. The ceremony commemorated the 65 Wall victims -- most of them refugees shot by East German guards. Herr Schuetz later addressed the crowd in a low-key speech.

He said the Wall was a reminder of the need to attempt to bring about more reasonable conditions. He said that shall pathos and well-formulated protest haven't achieved anything.

Others also placed wreaths at the Memorial Meanwhile, in East Berlin, armed columns of armed factory workers marched to mark the Wall's anniversary.

Later in West Berlin, some 500 members of right-wing organisations placed a wreath at a memorial to Peter Fechter, who was killed in 1962 when he tried to cross over the Wall from East Berlin.
