    NEAR: THE FINAL ASSEMBLY PLANT FOR MINUTEMAN MISSILES THAT CARRY THE MULTIPLE WARHEADS IS AT HILL AIR FORCE BASE, NEAR OGDEN, UTAH.

    THE MISSILES ARE ASSEMBLED ONE AT A TIME ON 8 WIDELY SPACED BUILDINGS. THEY USE SOLID PROPELLANTS WHICH ARE HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE.

    THE MINUTEMAN IS A THREE STAGE MISSILE AND THE MAJOR COMPONENTS COME FROM OTHER STATES TO UTAH. WHILE THEY ARE DANGEROUS TO HANDLE, SOLID PROPELLANT THEY ARE RELATIVELY EASY TO PUT TOGETHER. ON PRESENT SCHEDULES, THE PLANT CAN ASSEMBLE 5 MISSILES A WEEK.

    THE NOSE, WHICH CONTAINS THE WARHEAD, IS NOT CONNECTED HERE. THEY ARE JOINED TO THE ROCKET AT THE MISSILE SILOS.

    THE TOP STAGE OF THE NEW, MINUTEMAN 3 IS ONLY ABOUT 4 FEET IN DIAMETER...THIS IS WHERE THREE "H" BOMBS CAPABLE OF DESTROYING THREE SEPARATE CITIES.

    ASSEMBLED MISSILES ARE LOADED INTO SPECIAL CONTAINERS THAT WILL CONTROL THEIR TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY TO PREVENT DETERIORATION DURING LONG PERIODS OF STORAGE AND TO PROTECT THEM DURING SHIPMENT.

    THEY ARE STORED IN BUNKERS UNTIL THE TIME FOR SHIPPING.

    THE FIRST SHIPMENTS ARE GOING NOW ...TO MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA...WHERE THE FIRST TEN MINUTEMAN 3 MISSILES ARE SCHEDULED TO BE OPERATIONAL BY THE END OF JUNE.

    THE UNITED STATES PLANS TO DEPLOY 500 OF THESE NEW MISSILES RN, NBC NEWS, NEAR OGDEN, UTAH.
