On Wednesday (3 Jan) student demonstrators, watched carefully by security police, paraded through the streets of Dacca to the United States Information Service building once again...this time bearing aloft an effigy of President Nixon, which was later burnt, and the covered body of one of their number killed in an earlier incident.

SYNOPSIS: For the past week Dacca, the Bangladesh capital, has witnessed continuing demonstrations of protest against United States involvement and bombing in Vietnam. Most of the demonstrators have been students and members of political organisations.

The demonstrations gathered momentum in the New Year after security police opened fire on a crowd protesting outside the library building of the United States Information Service. Two demonstrators were killed and six seriously injured.

On Wednesday, friends and relatives of those killed earlier in the week, placed wreaths on a roadside shrine. The police have said they opened fire on demonstrators after a petrol bomb had been thrown into the United States library premises. Sheikh Mujib Rahman, the Bangladesh Prime Minister, ordered an urgent enquiry into the incident. After hoisting a Liberation Front flag to the masthead of the flagpole at the United States Information Service building, on Wednesday, the demonstrators paraded an effigy of President Nixon.

Students, who had earlier clambered onto the roof of the library premises, suspended the effigy of the American President high above the street, and set fire to it.
