    U THANT REFUSED TO TELL JOURNALISTS WHETHER HIS EFFORTS HAD BROUGHT THE UNITED STATES AND NORTH VIETNAM ANY HEARER THE CONFERENCE TABLE. THE U.N. SECRETARY GENERAL IS SCHEDULED TO FLY TO NEW YORK TOMORROW (THURSDAY) AFTER VISITING FOUR WORLD CAPITALS IN FOUR DAYS INTEREST IN PARIS CENTRE ON U THANT'S 75-MINUTE MEETING WITH MR MAI VAN BO AT THE NORTH VIETNAMESE DIPLOMATIC MISSION'S RED BRICK HEADQUARTERS, WHERE THE SECRETARY-GENERAL WENT STRAIGHT FROM THE AIRPORT AFTER ARRIVING FROM LONDON. NEITHER MEN WOULD TALK TO NEWSMEN AFTER THE MEETING BUT OFFICIALS SAID HANOI HAD BEEN INFORMED ON ITS CONTEXT.

    U THANT'S MEETING WITH MR BO WAS ARRANGE BY A NORTH VIETNAMESE JOURNALIST LIVING IN LONDON. THE SECRETARY-GENERAL'S ARRIVAL TOOK FRENCH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS BY SURPRISE BUT GENERAL DE GAULLE PUT ASIDE A BUSY SCHEDULE TO HAVE A SIXTY-FIVE MINUTE MEETING WITH U THANT. BEFORE SEEING THE PRESIDENT, U THANT RECEIVED THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR, SIR PATRICK REILLY, AT HIS PARIS HOTEL. NO DETAILS OF THE MEETING WITH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE OR SIR PATRICK WERE GIVEN BUT THE FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTER, M COUVE DE MURVILLE, TOLD NEWSMEN THAT FRANCE WOULD NOT TAKE ANY SPECTACULAR INITIATIVE ON VIETNAM.
