    ITALY'S NEW PRESIDENT, SIGNOR ANTONIO SEGNI, TWICE HIS COUNTRY'S PRIME MINISTER AND ONCE FOREIGN MINISTER, TOOK THE OATH OF OFFICE MAY 11 IN ROME AT A JOINT SESSION OF PARLIAMENT.

    THE OATH OF OFFICE WAS ADMINISTERED BY SIGNOR GIOVANNI LEONE, PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES. WHEN IT WAS FINISHED, A LARGE MAJORITY OF THE 248 SENATORS AND 596 DEPUTIES BROKE INTO WARM APPLAUSE. JOINING IN WERE ALL PARTIES THAT HAD VOTED FOR SIGNOR SEGNI IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, INCLUDING THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS, WHOSE LEADER, SIGNOR GIUSEPPE SARAGAT, WAS NARROWLY DEFEATED FOR THE PRESIDENCY, AND BY THE REPUBLICANS AND LEFT-WING SOCIALISTS.

    IN HIS INAUGURAL ADDRESS PRESIDENT SEGNI REITERATED ITALY'S DEDICATION TO THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION. HE ALSO SAID THAT ITALY WILL CONTINUE TO STRIVE FOR AN "EFFECTIVE EUROPEAN UNITY."
