  • Description

Turkish Cypriots have begun to take over dozens of farms abandoned by Greek-Cypriots in Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus.

Hundreds of Greek-Cypriot farmers fled in the face of the Turkish army advance from Kyrenia. The Turkish Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture estimated that 20,000 head of cattle, 80,000 pigs, 7,000,000 broiler chickens and 500,000 goats and sheep were left wandering without food or care. Acres (hectares) of citrus groves were also left without irrigation.

The livestock wandered about for six weeks before being rounded up and penned.

The Ministry of Agriculture now sends out 300 farmers each day to tend the animals and to water the citrus groves.

Greek Cypriot farmers have so far not been allowed to return to their farms in Turkish-occupied areas, and the question they are asking is whether they will be compensated for their losses.
