Background: BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER, MR HAROLD MACMILLAN FACES A NEW POLITICAL DANGER - ONLY ONE DAY AFTER HE WAS REPORTER TO HAVE WON THE CABINET'S CONFIDENCE OVER THE PROFUMO AFFAIR. SPECULATIVE RUMOURS AND REPORTS TODAY (THURSDAY) SUGGEST THAT UP TO FOUR OF HIS MINISTERS WERE CONTEMPLATING RESIGNATION.

THE FOUR WERE SAID TO BE LED BY MR ENOCH POWELL, THE MINISTER OF HEALTH, BUT WHEN HE ARRIVED AT ADMIRALTY HOUSE HE WOULD MAKE NO COMMENT TO PRESSMEN. HOWEVER, ONE OF THE FOUR, HOUSING MINISTER, KEITH JOSEPH, DID SPEAK TO REPORTERS. HE SAID:"I COMPLETELY DENY THAT I HAD RESIGNATION IN MIND LAST NIGHT." ASKED WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE GOVERNMENT NOW, HE REPLIED:"IT WILL GO ON USUAL."
THE FOUR MINISTERS NAMED - MR POWELL, SIR KEITH JOSEPH, HOME SECRETARY HENRY BROOKE AND EDUCATION MINISTER, SIR EDWARD BOYLE - WERE REPORTED TO BE PLANNING TO USE THE RESIGNATION WEAPON TO FORCE MR MACMILLAN'S RESIGNATION ON THE GROUND THAT HE COULD NOT HOLD HIS CABINET TOGETHER.

FILMED ARRIVING FOR TODAY'S MEETING WERE: SIR KEITH JOSEPH, LORD DILHORNE, THE LORD CHANCELLOR; MR ERNEST MARPLES, MINISTER OF TRANSPORT; MR CHRISTOPHER SAOMES; MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE; MR FREDERICK ERROLL, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE; MR REGINALD MAUDLING; CHANCELLOR OF THE EXHEQUER; MR BOYD-CARPENTER, CHIEF SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY; MR ENOCH POWELL; AND MR R.A.BUTLER, FIRST SECRETARY OF STATE.
