  • Description

Militant Milwaukee Negroes have been demonstrating for open housing for the past three nights, led by a Roman Catholic priest named Father James Groppi (pronounced GROP-pee, as in DROP-pee). The marchers are members of the Youth Council of the Milwaukee chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Monday night the marchers were harassed by white persons whose neighbourhood the demonstrators passed through. Tuesday the march was repeated through the same area and during the night the headquarters of the Youth Council was set afire and destroyed. Milwaukee' Mayor Henry Maier (pronounced MY-er) hastily passed a proclamation forbidding further demonstrations Wednesday afternoon, but the group met last night outside the ruins of their headquarters and 50 of them were arrested by police for defying the ban. Father Groppi announced, though, that there will be another rally tonight (Thursday, Aug. 31), possibly indoors at the church where he is assistant pastor.
