  • Description

The death tool in the earthquake which devastated a large area of north-eastern Iran on Wednesday (14 November) rose to more than 300 as rescue workers cleared rubble from a string of villages affected. Iran's official radio reported that Army troops, backed by civilian volunteers, were rallying to a call by the revolutionary leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, to help with the rescue operation.

SYNOPSIS: The earthquake was centred near the town of Tabes where thousands of people were killed in a quake last year. A string of villages in the Khorassan Province were hit, many of them left uninhabitable. For some people it meant their second forced move from their homes in just over a year.

On Thursday (15 November) rescue workers had recovered 350 bodies from the rubble, and large areas still remained to be cleared. The Iranian Red Lion and Sun Society, equivalent to the Red Cross, had sent a medical team to aid the injured.
