Background: India has a new Vice-President. He is Mr. Basppa Danappa Jatti, who was the overwhelming choice of an electoral college, comprising members of the Upper and Lower Houses of India's central Parliament.

Mr. Jatti, who is 62 and a Hindu, was the candidate from Prime Minister Indira Ghandi's ruling Congress Party - and as such was the clear-cut favourite. His only opponent was Mr. N. E. Horo, a tribal leader and Parliamentarian, who was supported by a number of the opposition parties.

The final vote count was Mr. Jatti, 521; Mr. Horo, 141.

Mr. Jatti replaces Mr. Gopal Pathak. He is deputy to President Fakhruddi Ali Ahmed, who took over as Head of State last week.
