    Russian flyweight, Alexander Woronin, broke two world records on the first day of the European Weightlifting Championships in East Berlin, East Germany on Saturday (3 April). Woronin created the two new world records in the enatch and jerk events.

    In the snatch competition Woronin beat Hungary's Gyorgy Kszegi, in second place, and Zymunt Smalcerz, in third place. In the jerk Woronin came second to Koszegi with another Hungarian, Lajos Szucs, in third place.

    It was his overall point score in both events that gave him his world records.

    On Sunday (4 April) the bantamweight events were held. No world records were broken.

    In the snatch event Karel Prohl of Czechoslovakia came first, Peter Nurikian of Bulgaria second and Imre Stefanovics of Hungary third.

    The jerk was won by Nurikian with Leszek Skorupa of Poland second and Stefanovics third. Nurikian was also the overall winner for the bantamweight division.

    The competition is being held in the Werner-Seelenbinder Hall and 166 athletes from 25 European countries are taking part.

    The championships will continue until 11 April.

    Woronin won the event and established a new world record at the same time. Gyorgy Koszegi came second and Zymunt Smalcerz third.

    Although Koszegi won this event with Woronin in second place and Lajos Szucs of Hungary third, it was Woronin who succeeded in his world record attempt.

    Woronin was the overall winner for the flyweight division with Koszegi in second place and Szucs third.

    Sunday - and Czechoslovak bantamweight Karel Prohl; in the snatch event which he went on to win.

    Still the snatch - and Poland's Leszek Skorupa makes an attempt. Although unplaced in this event he went on to come second in the jerk later on.

    Peter Nurikian of Bulgaria. A consistent competitor, he came second in the snatch and went on to win the jerk.

    Nurikian also won the overall point score for the bantamweight events. Skorupa was second and Prohl third.
