Background: In Dublin Eire, auctioneer Corry Buckley shows his plans for a class roof to cover the Grafton Street shopping thorough fare. The idea, Buckley says, holds water, since rain falls six days out of ten in his country.

Grafton Street traders back Buckley's roof project. Except Patrick Grogan, his business is selling umbrellas.

When Grafton Street lies under its glass top - the plan is to have it covered in 18 months' time - it will probably be the only one of its kind in Europe.

Conjecture - an Irish pastime - runs rife in Grafton Street. There are those who say the street lighting will have to be on all day in Winter when snow lies on the roof. There are those who thing of the entrapped noise and exhaust fumes. And there is Umbrellaman Grogan.

But the benefits, according to the proponents, swamp the objections there will be no more rain, hail, snow of sleet to dismay the shopper and stroller. Who knows, they say, perhaps roses may broom on Grafton Street pavements.
