  • Description

THE TWO AMERICAN CLIMBERS WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM FROSTBITE ARRIVED AT KATMANDU YESTERDAY (MONDAY) BY HELICOPTER FROM THE SLOPES OF EVEREST. DR. BERRY EXAMINED THEM IN HOSPITAL, AND LATER SAID IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO JUDGE AT THIS STAGE WHETHER EITHER WOULD HAVE TO LOSE TOES.

BARRY BISHOP, AGED 30, AND WILLIAM UNSOELD, 36, WERE TWO OF FOUR AMERICAN CLIMBERS WHO SCALED EVEREST ON 22 MAY. ALL SPENT THE NIGHT AT 28,000 FEET WITHOUT TENTS OR SLEEPING-BAGS, IN 50 DEGREES OF FROST, WHEN THEY FAILED TO FIND CAMP SIX IN THE DARK. THEY COULD NOT DIG A CAVE IN THE SNOW, BUT LAY DOWN ON THE ROCKS.

REPORTERS WERE TOLD BY THE TWO MEN IN THE HOSPITAL GARDEN THAT THEY HAD BEEN CARRIED ON THE BACKS OF PORTERS FROM THE EVEREST BASE CAMP TO THE 20-MILE DISTANT SHERPA CENTRE OF NAMCHE BAZAR. WILLIAM UNSOELD SAID HE LEFT ON THE SUMMIT OF THE WORLD'S HIGHEST PEAK A CRUCIFIX GIVEN TO HIM BY A PRIEST. AND AT THE SUMMIT THEY COULD SEE THE TRACKS OF THE TWO MEN WHO CLIMBED THE MOUNTAIN ON 1ST MAY.
