  • Description

A Canadian satellite and an American satellite were rocketed into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Sunday night (28 November) aboard a single booster rocket.

The satellites are the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Direct Measurements Explorer and the second in a series of five Alouette vehicles developed by the Canadian Defense Research Board.

Scientists hope the satellites will return information enabling them to predict and overcome the effect of storms in the ionosphere, a layer of electrified particles that reflect radio waves and make long distance communications possible.

A space agency official said the double launching went off without a hitch.
