SOME 600 PARTICIPANTS TOOK PART IN THE CENTURIES OLD CUSTOM OF DANCING AND MASQUERADING THROUGH THE VILLAGE STREETS. THE CARNIVAL IS THE FOCAL POINT THROUGHOUT THE AREA AND THE 30,000 SPECTATORS INCLUDED VISITORS FROM ITALY, AUSTRIA AND HUNGARY.

THE DANCERS - MOST OF WHOM ARE DRESSED IN THE SKINS OF MYTHOLOGICAL ANIMALS - ARE KNOWN AS "KURENTS". THEY WEAR BELLS ROUND THEIR WAISTS AND THEIR LEAPING ACTIONS ARE BASED ON OLD CUSTOMS WHICH WERE BELIEVED TO CHASE AWAY WINTER AND MAKE ROOM FOR THE SPRING SUNSHINE.

THE ANIMAL SKINS AND MASKS ARE REMNANTS OF ANCIENT RELIGIOUS RITES, BUT THEY ARE STILL PRESERVED IN THIS ANNUAL CEREMONY.

THE CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE WAS ENHANCED BY THE GAILY DECORATED VILLAGE STREETS AND THE COLOURFUL, FLOWER-DECORATED COSTUMES OF PARTICIPANTS.
