  • Description

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1937, SCOTLAND SEAT ENGLAND - 2-0 - AT HAMPDEN PARK, GLASGOW, APRIL 14.

BRIGHT SUN, UNUSUALLY LITTLE WIND FOR HAMPDEN, SKILFUL REFEREEING BY L. HORN OF HOLLAND, FEW AND UNMALICIOUS FOULS, TWO TEAMS BENT ON PLAYING GOOD FOOTBALL - THESE WERE THE RARE INGREDIENTS OF A SMOOTH AND SOPHISTICATED MATCH THAT DELIGHTED A CROWD OF 133,000.

THE SHAPE OF THE GAME WAS ESTABLISHED ALMOST FROM THE FIRST KICK. OMINOUSLY SOON FOR ENGLAND, SCOTLAND WERE PACING AND DIRECTING PLAY THROUGH A MASTERLY QUADRANGLE OF PLAYERS AT WING-HALF AND INSIDE-FORWARD. BARELY A QUARTER OF AN HOUR INTO THE GAME, THE SCOTS TOOK THE BALL OFF A FEEBLY ATTACKING CHARLTON AND PASSED IT TO LAW, WHO DODGED A FLYING LEAP BY ENGLAND'S SUPERB GOALKEEPER SPRINGETT AND CROSSED THE BALL SO PRECISELY THAT WILSON HAD TIME TO AIM HIS SCORING SHOT ACCURATELY INSIDE THE NEAR POST.

FITFULLY, ENGLAND CONTRIVED TO RUN AGAINST THE TIDE, BUT GREAVES AND DOUGLAS WERE TOO SLOW TO SNATCH THEIR CHANCES, CHARLTON WAS NOT A SUCCESS, AND HAYNES SUFFERED THE FATE OF THE LONG WOLF. ON ONE OCCASION, HAYNES BROKE OUT FROM THE DEFENCE ONLY TO FIND THAT THERE WAS NO ENGLISH PLAYER AHEAD TO TAKE A PASS - ALL HIS FELLOW FORWARDS HAD GONE BACK TO COVER THEIR OWN GOAL WHERE SPRINGETT WAS UPHOLDING ENGLAND'S HONOUR ALMOST SINGLE-HANDED.

THUS, WHEN THE SECOND HALF BEGAN, ENGLAND WERE MORALLY FOUR GOALS BEHIND, ALTHOUGH ACTUALLY ONLY ONE. THE CONTEST BETWEEN SCOTLAND AND SPRINGETT RESUMED. LAW BEAT FLOWERS, AND SCOTT'S DRIVE WENT NARROWLY WIDE AFTER HITTING SWAN ON THE WAY.

ENGLAND RALLIED UNDER THE INCESSANT ATTACKS AND REGAINED ENOUGH STATURE TO WORRY SCOTLAND'S GOALKEEPER BROWN SEVERAL TIMES. FOR A WHILE THE MATCH SEEMED TO BE CAUGHT IN A STATE OF BALANCE. ONLY TWO MINUTES WERE LEFT WHEN WILSON AND LAW ONCE MORE CUT THE ENGLISH DEFENCE OPEN. SWAN, NARASSED TO DESPERATION, HANDLED THE BALL. THEN, AS SPRINGETT DIVED TO HIS LEFT, SCOTLAND'S SKIPPER CALDOW PULLED THE PENALTY KICK INTO THE OTHER CORNER OF THE ENGLISH GOAL.
