Sixteen-year-old Elke Maria Skotschier, from Austria on Friday (August 9) was crowned Miss. Young International - the climax of a glittering parade of beauty and fashions at Tokyo's Meiji outer garden. The 15 judges selected Elke from a field of contestants represent 39 countries.
Elke, who wants to become a model, won her crown made from 1300 pearls and a cash prize of one million yen (about 1500 sterling).
The runner-up was an early favourite for the title, 19-year-old Deirdre Anne Raynor from Australia.
Two other minor titles were also decided - Miss. Friendship, won by the Canadian entrant 18-year-old Heather Best; and Miss. Photogenic, won by Bernadette Paille, from Tahiti.
The contest, now in its fifth year is open to entrants from all countries, provided they're aged between 15 and 20 years. Firstly, the girls paraded in national costume, hen swim suits. The finalists in the major quest were judged finally, wearing evening dress.
