  • Description

SINGAPORE'S COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL LIFE IS VIRTUALLY AT A STANDSTILL TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS 100,000 WORKERS CONTINUE TO STAY OUT ON THE SECOND DAY OF AN ISLAND-WIDE STRIKE. THE STRIKE WAS CALLED BY THE LEFT-WING SINGAPORE ASSOCIATION OF TRADE UNIONS (SATU) AND WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED TO LAST TWO DAYS. HOWEVER YESTERDAY'S ARREST OF SEVERAL UNION LEADERS AND THREE MEMBERS OF THE SINGAPORE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY, ALL OF THE OPPOSITION BARISAN SOSIALIS PARTY, MAY MEAN THAT THE STRIKE WILL CONTINUE INDEFINITELY.

ACCORDING TO A MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT STATEMENT, THE MEN DETAINED WERE "RESPONSIBLE FOR DRAWING UP PLANS INVOLVING WORKERS, RURAL FOLK, AND STUDENTS IN ACTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT IN FURTHERANCE OF THEIR PLOT TO SEIZE POWER BY CREATING WIDE-SPREAD DISORDER AND CHAOS."
TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, THE PRIME MINISTER HAS SAID THAT IF THE SITUATION IN SINGAPORE DETERIORATES HE WILL FLY THERE AND PERSONALLY TAKE CHARGE OF THE SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS.

REPORTS FROM SINGAPORE TODAY SAID THAT WHILE THE CITY'S INDUSTRIAL LIFE WAS AFFECTED WORSE THAN YESTERDAY IT WAS NOT AS BAD AS AT FIRST FEARED AND SEVERAL INDIVIDUAL BRANCHES OF STRIKING UNIONS RETURNED TO WORK THROUGH PICKET LINES WITH POLICE PROTECTION. SOME CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND PICKETS HAVE BEEN REPORTED. A SPOKESMAN FOR SEVERAL MAJOR FORMS SAID THEY EXPECTED THEIR EMPLOYEES TO RETURN TO WORK TOMORROW AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED, INSPITE OF THE SATU ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE STRIKE WILL CONTINUE INDEFINITELY.

THE TRADE UNION LEADERS HAVE ACCUSED THE SINGAPORE, FEDERAL AND BRITISH GOVERNMENTS OF SEEKING TO SUPPRESS LEFT-WING THOUGHT, SOCIALIST TRADE UNIONS, AND CHINESE EDUCATION.
