  • Description

Tony Jacklin, holder of the United State Open Golf Championship, was today (Friday) eliminated from the Piccadilly Match Play championship at Wentworth, near London, by the reigning British Open champion, Jack Nicklaus.

Nicklaus won five and four in today's semi-final, leaving an all-American final with Lee Trevino tomorrow.

The play was evenly balanced until the half way stage when Nicklaus took an almost impregnable lead. By the thirteen hole he was six up. When the match looked like ending there, Nicklaus missed his putt.

On the fourteenth, a short hole, Jacklin had a disastrous drive into a bunker, while Nicklaus steered a straight ball to less than 10 feet of the hole. A two-putt was all he needed, and Jacklin, after a brave chip from the sane to within three feet of the pin, conceded the match without asking Nicklaus to putt out.
