    Anthony Vrachas, a 19-year-old Rhodesian soldier killed by guerrillas has been buried in Salisbury with full military honours.

    The burial took place on Friday (7 May) after a service in the Greek Orthodox Church in Salisbury attended by more than one thousand people, most of the from the Greek community in the city.

    Following the guerrilla attack in which the soldier was killed, Rhodesian security officers established a third operational command in the south-east of the country. This area has been the target of heavy insurgent infiltration in recent weeks.

    Last Friday (7 May), Rhodesian Army headquarters announced the death in action of another soldier, a 32-year-old corporal. He became the 25th member of the security forces to die this year in Rhodesia's fight against nationalist guerrillas.

    The biggest weapon employed by either side so far is a mortar or rocker-propelled grenade. But since the beginning of the year, the guerrillas have staged only six mortar attacks. All six have been hit and-run affairs.

    Rhodesia's Army headquarters said it was quite capable of holding its own in this kind of situation by using rifles and similar mortars and grenades.

    SYNOPSIS: Mourners arrived at the Greek Orthodox church in Salisbury, Rhodesia, for the funeral service for a 19-year-old Rhodesian soldier, Anthony Vrachas, who was killed in action against nationalist guerrillas. The service, and subsequent burial ceremony which took place last Friday, were conducted with full military honours. More than a thousand people are believed to have attended the ceremonies, most of them from the city's Greek community.

    Following the recent increase in guerrilla attacks in border areas of the country, the Rhodesian security authorities have established a third operational command in the south east region. This area has been target of hey insurgent infiltration during the past few weeks. On the same day Anthony Vrachas was buried, the authorities reported the death of a 32-year old corporal. He was the 25th soldier to die this year.

    The new operational command includes most of Fort Victoria province and the important road and rail links with South Africa, which were attacked by guerrillas at Easter. the central command H.Q. has been set up at Chiredzi. It will control operations along the crucial border areas close to Mozambique.
