  • Description

The 17th World Girl Guides Congress was opened in Athens, May 9, by Queen Frederika of Greece, at a ceremony on Pnyx hill, facing the Acropolis and in ancient times the site for the People's Assembly. Two hundred and fifty delegates from 44 countries will participate. Appropriately, the Congress takes for its motto the saying of a Greek philosopher, Democritus; "Harmony of thought is the creator of friendship."
Agenda for the Congress includes discussion on a proposed new world Guide centre in the Asian area, and other plans for the future.

At the opening were famous figures of the Guide world, among them World Chief Guide and founder of the movement Lady Baden-Powell (Britain), President of the World Guides Commission Countess Bernadotte (Sweden), and Miss E. Lotz (Switzerland) in charge of international public relations.
