Election Day in the United States is still almost three weeks away. But preparations are already underway in Washington for a still more distant event -- the inauguration of the President on January 20th
Workmen are busy in the Capitol Plaza building stands that will serve as a platform for photographers and TV cameramen. Later, spectator stands will be erected in the plaza and on Pennsylvania Avenue where thousands of spectators will view the inaugural parade.
Normally, winters in Washington are mild, but at the last inauguration -- that of the late President Kennedy in 1961 -- a heavy snowfall the night before left a thick blanket of white on the city, calling for a mighty effort to clear a path for the parade. Officials are hoping there will be no repeat of the 1961 snowfall.
