  • Description

The pineapple plantation in Sifra, Guinea, is the biggest in the country and probably the largest in Africa. The crop is important to the Guinea economy, and a canning factory has recently been built to export canned pineapple as well as fresh fruit.

This production is part of some film shot by VISNEWS cameraman Louis Giminez, one of the few international news cameramen allowed into Guinea in recent years. It illustrate an interesting aspect of life in Guinea - one rarely seen by outsiders.

SYNOPSIS: Guinea's pineapple plantation at the village of Sifra, 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of the capital, Conakry, is the largest in the country - and probably the biggest in Africa.

The plantation covers several acres (hectares) and is continually expanding. The company in charge is a joint Guinea-Belgian concern, and a Belgian managing director is responsible for the organisation together with a consultative committee of Guinean workers.

Over a thousand workers are employed at Sifra, split between the irrigated pineapple fields and a recently-completed canning factory. The crop forms an important part of the Guinean agricultural programme, which in turn occupies 95 per cent of the country's workers. The modern canning plant has enabled tinned pineapple slices to be exported in addition to fresh fruit.

Rice, another important crop, is also grown at Sifra. Pineapple production at the village, meanwhile reached 17,000 tons in 1970 -- and the target is 22,000 tons for this year. The aim of management at Sifra is to make the community highly competitive with African and international pineapple markets. Other crops important to the Guinea economy are bananas, palm nuts and coffee.
