The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Thousands of people come here every day. And they always stop in this fantastic hall, which seems to carry a person into a magic world of fairy-tales. Three giants, three legendary Russian heroes greet you on the threshold of this fantastic land. An here is the creator of this fairy-tale land - the outstanding Russian painter Victor Vasnetsov. On one of the quiet streets of Moscow stands a house which reminds a fairy-tale tower. This is where Vasnetsov lived and created many of his paintings. Deep respect for the rich and original folk art coincided in the artist with great love for Russian nature. Vasnetsov had spent a large period of his life in Abramtsevo, one of the most colourful places in the suburbs of Moscow. It seems that the personages of Vasnetsov's paintings love somewhere near, quite close to us. But not only fairy-tale subjects interested the painter. He constantly turned his attention to the past of his people, to the dramatic and heroic pages of the Russian history. Today, marking the 125th birthday of the painter, we remember the words of Vasnetsov, which had been the credo of all his creative work: "I have always been certain that in genre and historical paintings, in fairy-tales, songs, epics and dramas is expressed the whole image of people, their inner and outer self, together with their past, present and, perhaps, even their future."
