  • Description

Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelaziz Bouteflika arrived in Brussels on Wednesday (28 JUNE) at the start of a two-day visit to the Belgian capital for talks with Belgian and Common Market officials.

Mr. Bouteflika was greeted at Brussels Airport by Belgian Foreign Minister Pierre Harmel.

One topic the Algerian Foreign Minister is expected to be discussing is foreign trade. Algeria is going all out to build up its overseas trade. The country hopes to seek out new partners and is aiming to increase exchanges with developing countries.

Algeria's major trading partners remain France and other Common Market countries. Last year, the Common Market countries accounted for 74 per cent of Algeria's exports and 65 per cent of its imports.

But, according to Algeria's Commerce Minister, their imports of wine and other agricultural products from Algeria will largely determine how much the North African nation buys from Western Europe in future.
