  • Description

The acting President of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou, has pledged to follow in the footsteps of Archbishop Makarios, who died on Wednesday (3 August) But the leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community, Mr Denktash, accused Archbishop Makarios of 'creating the Cyprus problem." And he claimed Mr Kyprianou was an 'imitation of Makarios and extremely narrow-minded."
While crowds queued outside St. John's church in Nicosia to pay their respects to Makarios, the process of selecting a new leader went on because a full election is due next February, it's thought likely that only one candidate will stand for interim president, thus avoiding a contest in the meantime. Chris Drake of the BBC spoke to Mr Kyprianou.

One well-known face in Nicosia was that of ex-King Constantine of Greece, a personal friend of Archbishop Makarios. He arrived at Larnaca airport in a private jet before visiting St John's Church to see the body of Makarios lying in state. He also went to see the old presidential palace, destroyed during the civil war.
