  • Description

A WELL-KNOWN SIERRA LEONEAN JOURNALIST, MR. BANKOLE TIMOTHY, HAS RETURNED TO ACCRA, THE CAPITAL OF GHANA, AFTER A NINE-YEAR ABSENCE. HE WAS DEPORTED FROM GHANA BY THE GOVERNMENT OF DR. NKRUMAH SOON AFTER GHANA GAINED HER INDEPENDENCE IN 1957 FOR STATEMENTS HE MADE IN HIS COLUMN IN THE "DAILY GRAPHIC."
MR. TIMOTHY, WHO WAS DEPUTY EDITOR OF THE "DAILY GRAPHIC", HAD STRONGLY CRITICISED DR. NKRUMAH'S DECISION TO PUT HIS HEAD ON GHANA CURRENCY AND COINS AND AGAINST THE ERECTION OF DR. NKRUMAH'S STATUE IN FRONT OF PARLIAMENT HOUSE.

AT THE AIRPORT, MR. TIMOTHY TOLD NEWSMEN THAT HE WAS GRATEFUL TO THE NEW GOVERNMENT OF GHANA FOR REVOKING THE DEPORTATION ORDER. HE WAS BACK IN ACCRA ON A SHORT VISIT TO MEET OLD FRIENDS. MR. TIMOTHY PRAISED THE EFFICIENCY OF THE GHANA CIVIL SERVICE AND SAID THAT, WITH THE CO-OPERATION OF THE PRESS, GHANA COULD LOOK FORWARD TO A PROSPEROUS FUTURE.
