    A huge crowd on Monday (14 October) joined Thai King Bumibhol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit in a ritual mass cremation ceremony for 71 people who died in bloody student demonstrations in Bangkok in October last year.

    Thai cabinet ministers, members of the National Assembly, foreign diplomats and students were among those attending the ceremony on the grounds of Sanam Luang market, near the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

    The Royal couple and a number of other people put torches to caskets containing the remains of the dead after a brief speech by Prime Minister Senya Dharmas ???.

    "Their sacrifice created a permanent democracy in the nation which everyone should maintain forever," the Prime Minister said.

    Police, troops, students and boyscouts joined in providing a strong security during the ceremony, which ended without any incidents.

    The ceremony marked the first anniversary of the fall of the former military government of Field Marshal Thanem Mittikachorn after violent student demonstrations.

    The demonstrations were ??? off when the government arrested 13 students after they had distributed leaflets ca??? for public support for the early drafting of a new constitution.

    The asked of the dead will be scattered over the ??? River, 15 miles east of Bangkok, in accordance with Thai tradition to secure peace for the s??? of the dead.
