    British steel workers from various parts of the country held a "Save our Jobs" demonstration in London on Monday (19 May) against proposals for widespread redundancies in the industry.

    They timed their march to coincide with talks between the British Steel Corporation and trade union leaders on proposal that would put 20,000 men out of work.

    representatives of the workers were allowed in the Corporation headquarters to hand a letter to the management voicing their protest.

    The Industry Secretary, Mr Anthony Benn, later spoke to workers at a meeting and assured them that, as long as he was in the job, their interests would be safeguard.

    He emphasised that before any final decision is taken, there must be talks among the Corporation, trade union leaders end the Government.
