    The chiefs and people of Akwapem and Akwamu communities marked the end of their annual yam festival on Friday (17 September) with a grand tribal gathering. The festival is one of the principal annual gatherings celebrated in Ghana.

    SYNOPSIS: At Akropong Akwapem, hundreds of people and their community leaders arrived for the gathering. It followed 13 days of festivities and rituals marking the harvesting of the new yam crop. After the harvest, the farmers offer their first crop tot he ancestral gods and fetishes of the area and rejoice at having escaped misfortune during their work.

    Many other age-long traditions and customs are also observed. The traditional name for the festival is Odwira, which means purification. The people give thanks for good health and pray for prosperity in the coming year and long life.

    The Paramount Chief of the Akwapem traditional area, Chief Nana Addo Dankwa the third, presided over the celebrations. This was his second festival at Akropong-Akwapem in the eastern region of Ghana.

    In the ceremonies, the Chief pledged his loyalty to the people ??? in return paid homage.

    This year the guest of honour was Major General L. A. ???, who was representing the Ghanaian government.
