  • Description

THOUSANDS OF YOUTHS BURST THROUGH POLICE CORDONS IN PRAGUE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA TODAY (MONDAY), THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATION'S FORMATION. CZECHOSLOVAK LEADERS AND SOVIET AMBASSADOR STEPHAN CERVONENKO WERE INSIDE HRADCANY CASTLE WHILE HUNDREDS OF YOUTHS DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE.

INSIDE THE CASTLE CZECHOSLOVAK COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER ALEXANDER DUBCEK DEFENDED HIS POLICIES IN A SPEECH TO SOVIET AND FOREIGN DIPLOMATS. "WE GAVE BACK TO MARX AND LENIN THE TRUE SUBSTANCE OF THEIR THOUGHTS," MR. DUBCEK SAID. THE CZECHOSLOVAK PRESIDENT, 73-YEAR-OLD GENERAL LUDVIK SVOBODA, ALSO TOLD THE COUNTRY TO "STAND FIRM". PRESIDENT SVOBADA SAID IT WAS NECESSARY TO CONTINUE THE REFORMS INITIATED AFTER JANUARY, WHEN THE NEW LEADERS TOOK OVER IN THE COUNTRY. HE SAID CZECHOSLOVAKIA KNEW WHERE IT HAD TO STAND IN A DIVIDED WORLD, BUT WITH ITS SKILLS AND WISDOM IT WOULD CREATE FREEDOM AND A GOOD FUTURE.

THE STUDENTS DEMONSTRATING OUTSIDE THE CASTLE DISPERSED AFTER SHOUTING ANTI-SOVIET SLOGANS. IN THE STREETS OF THE CITY THEY SHOUTED "RUSSIANS GO HOME" AND "GESTAPO, GESTAPO".

EARLIER A GROUP OF YOUNG DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED ON THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN PRAGUE AND TRIED TO HAND IN A NOTE CALLING FOR FULL CZECHOSLOVAK FREEDOM.
