    EIGHT FORMER GHANA CABINET MINISTERS APPEARED BEFORE AN ACCRA HIGH COURT ON TUESDAY ACCUSED OF CARELESS DISSIPATION OF PUBLIC PROPERTY INVOLVING ABOUT 2,000,00 NEW CEDIS (GBP1 MILLION).

    THE ACCUSED MINISTERS WERE MAKING THEIR FIRST APPEARANCE SINCE THEIR COMMITAL FROM A LOWER COURT. THE STATE CASE IS BEING PUT BY J.N.K. TAYLOR, THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS.

    BEFORE THE COURT ARE: E.K. BENSAH, FORMER MINISTER OF WORKS; A.E. INKUMSHA, FORMER MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR; F.K.D. GOKA, FORMER MINISTER OF FINANCE AND TRADE; KOFI BAAKO, FORMER MINISTER OF DEFENCE AND KWAKU BOATENG. THE OTHERS (NOT SHOWN IN FILM) ARE OSEI OWUSU-AFRIYIYE, FORMER MINISTER OF HEALTH AND L.R. ABAVANA, ANOTHER FORMER MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR.

    THE PRESIDING JUDGE SAID THAT HE WOULD ORDER THAT DEFENCE COUNSEL SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO INTERVIEW CLIENTS HELD IN PROTECTIVE CUSTODY. THE ACCUSED MEN ARE TO APPEAR BEFORE THE COURT AGAIN ON MARCH 21. OWUSU-AFRIYIYE, BENSAH AND ABAVANA, WHO WERE RELEASED FROM PROTECTIVE CUSTODY, WERE GRANTED BAIL IN THE SUM OF 60,000 NEW CEDIS (GBP30,000).
