SYNOPSIS: Wrestlers from the Soviet Union and Indian Armed Forces met in battle at the Indian Airforce Headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday. In the first Greco-Roman style bout, the Russian contestant Zhorov met India's Uttam Patil in the 48 Kg class. The Indian proved to be a tough opponent in the International class bout over three, three minute rounds.

Though there was no fall in the bout the judges awarded the match to the Indian. Most of the spectators at the match were Indian servicemen.

The Soviet team consisted of two Olympians--Silver medallist strakhov and gold medallist Dmitriev seen here in action against the Indian Armed Services champion, Paramanand. For those not familiar with Greco-Roman wrestling, the aim is to get your opponents shoulders pinned to the met one second. The legs of the wrestlers must not be used and no holds can be taken below the waist. In this match the Olympic Champion could not overpower his Indian opponent and the match was drawn.

Olympic Silver medallist Strakhov faced Singh in a bid to even the match one all and a draw. In recent years the Soviet Union and Asian athletes have come to the fore in this style of wrestling, winning many Olympic titles.

Wrestling bouts of this nature are judged by a referee, three judges and a timekeeper. In the case of a fall the referee strikes th???mat once and blows his whistle to signify a win. In this match Strakhov failed to gain a fall over his Indian opponent, but in the eyes of the judges worked hard enough to gain a points decision.
