    Egyptian Vice President Honsi Mubarak left France on Thursday (15 December) after talks with the French President, Giscard d'Estaing, and the French Prime Minister, Raymond Barre. Before he left he told reporters that he was very optimistic about peace prospects in the Middle East.

    SYNOPSIS: Half of Mr Mubarak's five-day visit to France was spent visiting nuclear power stations, but his meetings with France's leaders attracted most attention from newsmen.

    His first meeting was at the Prime Minister's office with Raymond Barre, on Wednesday night (14 December) at which he briefed the French Prime Minister on the current Cairo peace conference. He later told reporters the purpose of the talks was to explain everything concerning Egypt's initiative and Middle East problems.

    The next day at the Presidential Palace Mr Mubarak discussed the possibility of french guarantees for a Middle East settlement.
