  • Description

WORKERS EXCAVATING MEXICO CITY'S UNDERGROUND RAILWAY THIS WEEK HAVE UNCOVERED MORE ARTIFACTS BELONGING TO AN ANCIENT AZTEC CITY.

REMAINS OF THE AZTEC CITY OF TENOCHTITLAN HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED BENEATH A SQUARE IN THE CENTRE OF THE MEXICO CITY. THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY CITY, CLAIMED TO HAVE BEEN LARGER THAN LONDON OR PARIS AT THE TIME, WAS RAZED TO THE GROUND BY THE SPANISH INVADERS IN 1521. TWENTY FEET (SIX METRES) BELOW STREET LEVEL WORKMEN HAVE FOUND SCULPTURES, REMAINS OF TEMPLES, AND OTHER EXAMPLES OF AZTEC CRAFTMANSHIP.

TWO WAREHOUSES CONTAINING MORE THAN 50,000 AZTEC RELICS HAVE BEEN SALVAGED FROM THE EXCAVATIONS.

ARCHEOLOGISTS ARE HOPING TO FIND THE LOST FORTUNE OF SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF GOLD IDOLS, BULLION AND JEWELS, RUMOURED COLLECTED TO PAY THE RANSOM OF THE MEXICAN EMPEROR MONTEZUMA, BUT NEVER DELIVERED. MONTEZUMA WAS HELD PRISONER BY HERNAN CORTES IN THE EARLY SIXTEENTH CENTURY. THE REMAINS OF THE ANCIENT CITY MARK THE SITE OF THE BATTLEFIELD WHERE CORTES WON CONTROL OVER THE AZTEC EMPIRE.
