  • Description

The Arab Parliamentary Union met in Cairo on Saturday (17 January) and the Lebanese crisis was number one on the agenda of Middle East problems for discussion.

Delegates from nine Arab countries -- Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, and Mauritania -- started talks at the home of Egypt's President Sadat at Barrage, North Cairo.

While the Cairo talks were being held, Lebanon teetered on the brink of full-scale civil war.

A ceasefire announced by Lebanese Prime Minister, Rashid Karami, between rival Christian and Moslem gunmen, collapsed immediately when the right wing Christians launched a full-scale attack on Beirut's Moslem district.

The previous day Lebanese aircraft attacked left wing positions in the city. The attack was carried out against the orders of Mr. Karami.
