  • Description

In a highly unusual move, United Nations Secretary General U Thant took the rostrum at the General Assembly meeting on the mid-east Tuesday (20 June) to attack Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban's version of what Mr. Thant had done in withdrawing UN Emergency Forces from Egypt.

Mr. Thant charged the Israeli version had "no validity" and accused Israel of having "created provocations" during the past 10 years by violating the border at the Gaza Strip. The usually mild mannered Secretary General appeared infuriated by Mr. Eban's comments on his action made in an assembly speech Monday (19 June).

In that speech Mr. Eban said the decision to withdraw the UNEF (United Nations Emergency Force) was "disastrously swift" and its effect as to "make Sinai safe for belligerency." "What is the use of a fire brigade which vanishes from the scene as soon as the first smoke and flames appear?" Eban asked. Secretary General Thant took particular exception to what he called "this picturesque simile" and replied that even Eban would have to agree that "for more than 10 years UNEF had been remarkably effective in preventing incidents." He was greeted with the most enthusiastic applause heard so far at this session when he finished his defense of his actions.
