    Iran's unofficial head of state Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, in a new attack on his opponents, said those who wanted freedom only craved fro bars, brothels, drugs and casinos. The 79 year old Ayatollah was speaking in the holy city of Qom to mark the end of the Moslem fasting month of Ramadan, a religious event also celebrated in Teheran.

    SYNOPSIS: During the ninth month of the Moslem year rigid fasting is observed throughout hours. It is a period when the faithful reaffirm their faith, and in Iran it has greater significance: the religious leaders invoked Islam to reaffirm the unity of the revolution' which ousted the Shah. Ritual ablutions a re traditional evidence of devotion to Islam. But the revolution also introduced Islamic practises to Iran's judicial, political and even military spheres. Offenders are punished under Koranic law, and Kurd are executed for waging war on God and his representatives. And in the terms of the Koran they are the corrupt of the earth.

    Islamic laws are strictly enforced. Recently, a woman was sentenced to death, and another to flogging, for adultery, and men were lashed for selling alcoholic drinks. In his speech in Qom, the Ayatollah Khomeini referred to himself by the new title of Ololamr, a religious leader who is competent to judge all matters and whose orders it is a religious duty to obey.

    The Moslems of Iran are told that when democrats talk of freedom, they are really advocating prostitution, gambling and drug-taking.

    During the nation-wide day of prayer, the Ayatollah Khomeini directed most of his fury against the Kurds. He called them dictators hiding behind the banner of Democracy. Islam plays a big part in the war being waged against the Kurds: the Ayatollah Sadegh Khalkhali was sent to western Iran under orders from the clergy to punish those involved in fighting the government.
