Lebanon's Prime Minister, Dr. Selami al-Hoss, has been on a five-nation Middle East tour seeking?

  • Description

Lebanon's Prime Minister, Dr. Selami al-Hoss, has been on a five-nation Middle East tour seeking aid for the reconstruction of Lebanon after its savage 19-month civil war. He's been visiting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Syria, Egypt, and Libya.

SYNOPSIS: Dr. al-Hoss's fourth call was Egypt, where he was met at the start of his one-day visit by Egyptian Prime Minister Mamdouh Salem. The Lebanese Premier was also hoping that Egypt, one of the acknowledge leaders of the Arab world, might influence other Middle Eastern nations into helping his country's broken economy. The second purpose of Dr. al-Hoss's tour was to seek reassurances that the Arab peace force would remain in Lebanon long enough to entrench the enforced peace.

Dr. al-Hoss briefed President Anwar Sadat on ways of stabilising the peace in Lebanon. But while Egypt might offer training facilities for a new national Lebanese army, according to news agency reports from Cairn, it was not expected to offer weapons. Equally Egypt, itself trying to cope with a shaky economy, was not expected to offer financial help to Lebanon.

Dr. al-Hoss's talks with President Sadat were also attended by Egyptian Vice-Premier Hosni Mubarak and Premier Salem.
