    HE WON AFTER A JUMP-OFF AGAINST THE CLOCK WITH BRITAIN'S WILLIAM BARKER ON NORTH FLIGHT, AUSTRALIAN BARRY ROYCROFT ON GENOE AND HARVEY SMITH (BRITAIN) RIDING HARVESTER.HAYES' PREVIOUS WIN WAS IN 1950.

    NORTH FLIGHT AND GENOE BOTH HAD 12 FAULTS, HARVEY SMITH TOOK HARVESTER ROUND SLOWLY AND DELIBERATELY, BUT DISCLOSED ONE POLE FOR FOUR FAULTS.

    HAYES, WAS OBVIOUSLY AIMING AT A CLEAR ROUND, BUT GOODBYE III ERRED AT A DOUBLE, AND THE IRISH RIDER HAD TO HURRY.HIS TIME WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO TAKE FIRST PLACE - 57.6 SECONDS.

    HARVEY SMITH WAS SECOND, ROYCROFT THIRD AND BARKER FOURTH.
