  • Description

Mr. Nehru, now visiting Goa, went to see the dry docks and yards at Marmagao. He was warmly welcomed by the local population of Marmagao and Vasco de Gama. Several fold dancers danced about as they waited for his arrival. Mr. Nehru also visited the harbour of Marmagao...which incidentally was lying idle due to a indefinite strike by the dockers. All loading unloading activity at the port was at a standstill. The Marmagao harbour is being developed by India to become a major base for the Indian Navy. It has already been reported by a section of the press that submarines, which India is planning to add to her navy are going to be stationed here to protect the vast Indian coast line. Thousands had turned out to cheer Mr. Nehru in the burning sun, while this part of Indian waits for Monsoon. A security man carried an umbrella to protect Mr. Nehru from the scorching sun. At the Marmagao harbour Mr. Nehru boarded a launch to reach the Governor's residence where he is staying.
